Redevelopment of a rear garden site to deliver two three-storey dwellings. Located to the rear of a long and steeply sloping back garden of a suburban house, which terminates with frontage to another road, KHD secured planning permission at appeal for this new development of two family homes.

Overcoming significant topographical challenges, KHD’s proposals for two family homes were carefully configured so as to be sensitive to the immediate neighbours and to contribute positively to the evolving local character. The proposed composition of contextual design features and materials juxtaposed with contemporary details and systems deliver a design of very high quality.

A brick base grounds the house to the landscape, referencing neighbouring properties, whereas tile hanging to the first floor reduces the mass of the dwelling by dividing it into two distinct elements. The gable is clad in brick both at ground and first floor so it is read as a more prominent feature within the composition. The proposed composition of contextual design features and materials juxtaposed with contemporary details and systems deliver a design of very high quality.
